Ted Muehling’s Stunning Work

A collection of votives, candleholders and vases designed by Ted Muehling for Nymphenburg

I lived in Germany in the 1990s with my family and for five of those years we lived near the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory located on the grounds of the Nymphenburg Palace. Each day, I walked to the castle with my daughters and dog and spent time in the Nymphenburg store dreaming of the day I would be able to make my first purchase. On a visit to the store shortly before we moved back to the United States in 1999, I remember being stunned by the sheer beauty, elegance and freshness of a new collection by American designer Ted Muehling. It was a real departure from the more traditional pieces I had seen at Nymphenburg and I knew I had to buy a piece from Muehling’s colletion as my first Nymphenburg purchase and that would be souvenir from my eight years living in Germany. I selected the Coral Look Vase, an elegant piece that plays with transparency through perforated porcelain.

My first Nymphenburg purchase, the Coral Look Vase

It was completely serendipitous when I began working with Nymphenburg Porcelain in 2006 that I had the opportunity to meet Ted Muehling and visit his New York studio. Muehling is an incredible designer who has been designing jewelry and decorative objects inspired by organic forms in nature since 1976. His studio space was filled with inspiration from nature—bird figures, shells, branches, rocks, eggs, coral and other unique objects. The studio was also filled with beautiful porcelain, glass and bronze objects that Muehling designed in collaboration with some of the world’s most celebrated brands, including Nymphenburg, Lobmeyr, Steuben, and E.R. Butler.

It is a rare talent to be able to artfully translate such natural beauty in different mediums, and Muehling does so with admirable expertise. Making Muehling’s acquaintance and seeing his extraordinary work inspired us to expand our offerings. Below are some of his pieces that we are proud to offer at Kneen & Co. I hope you love them as much as I do.
